Health insurance legislation families should know about
Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act and the Health Care and Education Reconciliation Act (ACA) have put protections in place that are crucial for families with children with special health care needs and disabilities:
- Health insurance plans can’t limit or deny benefits or coverage outright because of a “pre-existing condition,” and they can’t put a lifetime dollar limit on most benefits. This helps make wellness and prevention services more affordable and accessible by requiring health plans to cover many preventive services without charging a co-payment, co-insurance, or deductible.
- These laws allowed NH to set up a Health Insurance Marketplace, an online market where people can easily see available health plans, compare plans’ details and prices, and apply for the plan that would be best for their family. All plans must be certified as a Qualified Health Plan and cover Essential Health Benefits.
- Youth up to 26 can remain on their parent’s health insurance. Check out the NH Health Insurance Marketplace page for more information and resources.
- If you need help choosing a plan that suits your family’s unique situation, health insurance navigators can assist you for free.
