An Introduction to Autism

The focus of this training is to increase understanding of autism spectrum disorders in children. We will discuss the functions of behavior, means of communication, and the impact of autism spectrum disorders on a child across settings. An additional focus of the training is to discuss the unique strengths and challenges of these children, and identify strategies for working with them.
Presenter: Melissa Colby, LICSW, has been a Child and Family Therapist at Riverbend Community Mental Health Center for the past 5 years. She received a Master’s degree in Social Work from the University of New Hampshire in 2007, and became a Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker in 2009. She has had the opportunity to work with children on the autism spectrum in various capacities for the past 10 years. Currently she is the coordinator of the ASD Emotional and Social Enrichment Program at Riverbend, which provides social skills groups for children on the autism spectrum, as well as parent support groups.
